For the second time in five years, Meike Babel has earned Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

As assistant coach for the Vanderbilt’s women’s tennis team for the past four seasons, Babel has helped lead the Commodores to the NCAA Round of 16 each year — including a national semifinal appearance in 2004.

Vanderbilt takes on top-ranked Stanford this Friday, with the winner advancing to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Originally from Langen, Germany, Babel was a 10-year veteran of the WTA Tour, having risen as high as No. 27 in the world rankings.

Prior to coming to Vanderbilt in the summer of 2003, Babel was an assistant at Tulane for two seasons, where she earned Regional Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2003.
