First Round: Auburn Leads SEC Women’s Golf Championship;
LSU duo Martens, Rather Atop Individual Standings

Franklin, Tenn. — The LSU duo of Caroline Martens and Alexis Rather, fired an even-par 72 to lead after the first round of the Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Championship at Vanderbilt Legends Club. Windy conditions caused difficulties for many in the field on the Ironhorse course (6,217 yards, Par 72).

Martens and Rather are one shot ahead of a foursome of players at one-over par, including Holly Cantwell and Marci Turner of Tennessee, Auburn’s Maria Martinez and Arkansas’ Amanda McCurdy.

Auburn leads the team standings with a 12-over par 300. The Tigers are one shot ahead of Tennessee (301) and Georgia (301). LSU is fourth after posting a 302. Host Vanderbilt is fifth at 303.

Vanderbilt’s Jacqui Concolino is tied for seventh place after posting a 2-over par 74. Commodores Kristen Svicarovich and Chris Brady both shot 76 to tie for 15th place, with Liebelei Lawrence tied for 23rd with a 77 and Julie Bartholomew in 33rd with a 78.

“We’re still in the thick of things,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Martha Richards Freitag. “We played a lot of good holes of golf. The only thing that hurt us were the double bogeys. If we can just stay away from that, we’ll be okay.”
