A Perfect Sunday

Dores sweep eight matches on final day of June Stewart Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team wrapped up the June Stewart Invitational with a perfect record on Sunday, winning all eight of its matches.

In singles, the Commodores swept five matches from SEC foe Ole Miss. Celia-Belle Mohr, preseason ranked No. 12, earned a straight-sets victory over No. 42 Ludmila Kareisova, and freshman Valeria Ray defeated Rachel Krzyzak. Sonya Macavei, Holly Staff and Amy Stevens all fought to win match tiebreaks after splitting sets.

Taking on Purdue in doubles, the No. 59-ranked duo of Mohr and Staff along with the Dore teams of Ray and Stevens, and Bridget Stammel with Anessa Lee swept the Boilermakers.

“On the whole, I was really pleased with the way we performed this weekend,” head coach Aleke Tsoubanos said. “I told the team after the last match today that I was impressed with the way that we progressively got better each day not just in terms of playing points, but in keeping a little more even mentally and emotionally. So much of being able to compete at your highest level starts with your thoughts and your responses to different situations that occur in matches, I think the biggest thing that will help us going forward in the spring during tough competitions is that we are in control of the mental part of our games.

“We had several great performances over the weekend, but if I had a game ball for the tournament it would go to Sonya Macavei. She’s worked so hard to get back into the competitive arena and these were her first matches since mid-January. I’m so proud of the way she battled, it was awesome having her out their fighting on the court with us again.”

Next up for Vanderbilt is the ITA All-American Championship, which will take place Sept. 30-Oct. 9 in Cary, North Carolina.
