GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team finished its first spring tournament of the season on Sunday, finishing in third place at the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville. Freshman Matthias Schwab led all Vanderbilt players at the tournament, finishing in a tie for sixth with a two-over par, 212 (71-71-70).

Junior Hunter Stewart also carded a top 10 finish, finishing in a tie for 10th after firing a final round 68 and ending the tournament with a four-over par, 214 (74-72-68). His 68 tied for the low round of the day on Sunday.

“I thought it was a really good day and a good start to the spring,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. “We had all five guys in it all day long and that’s what great teams do. The guys did a good job of concentrating down the stretch and finished strong. Obviously, Hunter played a great round and everyone else was really steady.”

Vanderbilt finished three strokes behind second-place Florida State and nine strokes back of tournament champion Arkansas.

Senior Charlie Ewing finished in the top 20 for the weekend after carding a three-round total of 217 (75-69-73, T-18), while sophomore Carson Jacobs finished in a tie for 22nd with a 218 (74-72-72). Junior Ben Fogler fired a 221 for the three-round tournament (74-76-71), and finished in a tie for 40th.

Mercer’s Trey Rule won a playoff with Florida State’s Hank Lebioda on the second hole to claim medalist honors with a final total of 206.

Vanderbilt returns to the course March 2-4 in Los Cabos, Mexico, at the Querrencia Cabo Intercollegiate.

“Moving forward we are going to focus on the parts of our game that can use improvement and prepare for our next tournament,” said Limbaugh.
