Zach Simpson Named Valley League Player of the Week 7-29-03

Vanderbilt’s Zach Simpson (6-0, 185, Jr., Fayetteville, Ark.) has been named Valley League Co-Player of the Week. He hit .714 (10-14) for the Staunton Braves holding off Harrisonburg in the chase for the Southern Division pennant. Simpson was batting .150, mostly in a reserve role, entering the week.

Simpson went 3-for-3 and scored the winning run in the Braves’ 2-1 win over the Harrisonburg Turks Wednesday (July 23). The win tied the two clubs for first place in the Southern Division.

On Sunday (July 27) with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Braves trailing Waynesboro 8-5, Simpson delivered a two-out single that led to three runs after a Waynesboro fielding error that tied the game at eight. Simpson was credited with one RBI on the play.

All 10 of his hits were singles as Simpson improved his batting average to .269.

Simpson shared the honor with New Market’s Brett Gardner.
