Yamakita Remains Perfect

Freshman Dore claims third straight win, moves on to qualifying round at All-Americans

CARY, N.C. — Freshman Mia Yamakita picked up a third straight win to begin her collegiate career and is moving on to the qualifying round of singles at the ITA All-American Championships at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, North Carolina.

Yamakita began her day against Naomi Xu of Cal, cruising to a 6-2 first set win. Xu, who went unbeaten at the No. 4 singles position last season for the Golden Bears, struck back with a 6-2 second set to even the score. In her first three set match, Yamakita fended off Xu to pull out a 6-4 victory in the final frame and seal the match. Her second match of the day came against Virginia’s Isabelle Lacy with a spot in the qualifying round on the line. Yamakita struck first in the opening set, taking a 6-4 win to move up 1-0. Lacy took the second 6-4 to force another third set on the day for the freshman: and Yamakita again delivered. With the match tied at 5-5, Yamakita locked down the final two games to nab a 7-5 set win, clinching the match.

Qualifying for both singles and doubles begins tomorrow and runs through Tuesday’s matches. Yamakita will be the lone Commodore competing in the qualifying round of singles play; she is set to face No. 102 Zuzanna Kubacha of Baylor at 10 a.m. In doubles, Yamakita pairs with fellow freshman Erin Pearce as the No. 43 ranked duo in their first collegiate match together. They begin with an early conference matchup against Kaitlyn Carnicella and Daniela Piani of South Carolina at 3 p.m. Junior Valeria Ray and senior Bridget Stammel, the No. 37 ranked doubles team, open their 2025-26 season against Yale’s Orly Ogilvy and Leena Friedman at 1:30 p.m. The women’s All-American tournament page is available online.
