ATHENS, Ga. — Vanderbilt women’s tennis senior Jackie Wu fell in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Singles Championship, but thanks to a scratch in the Doubles Championship, she will continue play in Athens, Ga.

Wu drew the number two overall seed in the singles championship, Duke’s Beatrice Capra. Capra took the opening round decision, 6-2, 6-2.

After the players each held serve in the first two games of the opening set, Capra broke Wu’s serve to take a 2-1 lead. Capra then took the next three games as well, jumping to a 5-1 lead.

Wu battled back and held serve to cut the deficit to 5-2, but Capra held the next game to take the opening set, 6-2.

Capra then jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Wu fought back, but it wasn’t enough as Capra held on to take the second set, 6-2.

Wu will remain in Athens and be joined by teammate Lauren Mira for the doubles tournament, which gets underway on Thursday, May 24.

The Commodore duo was the second alternate, but will now play an opening round match against Oklahoma’s Marie-Pier Huet and Whitney Ritchie.

Wu and Mira are ranked 30th in the latest edition of the ITA rankings, which were released prior to the NCAA Tournament. Huet and Ritchie are ranked 20th in the nation.

The winner will move on to the round of 16 and face either Kristi Boxx and Abby Guthrie of Ole Miss or Jana Juricova and Zsofi Susanyi of California.
