Wu captures title at Furman Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. –  Freshman Jackie Wu defeated Northwestern’s Georgia Rose in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to capture the third flight championship at the final day of the Furman Fall Classic. Wu, a native of Holmdel, N.J., posted an undefeated mark of 3-0, including a win over the nation’s 11th ranked player in Rose.

“Jackie played great the whole weekend and I am real proud of her,” head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “She played very smart and sound tennis in all of her matches.”

Vanderbilt’s Erica Robertson closed out the 22nd annual Classic by winning the third place match in her respected flight over Furman’s Jennifer Betts, 6-0, 6-3.

After posting two solid wins on Saturday, freshman Chelsea Preeg fell in a hard fought championship match to Tennessee’s Samantha Orlin in three sets, 7-6 (4), 1-6, 6-3. Preeg advanced to the fifth flight championship match by knocking off Clemson¹s Frederica van Adrichem and Florida State’s Jessica Wente.

Overall Macdonald liked what he saw from his young team. “I was proud of the way we played this weekend against great competition,” Macdonald said. “We learned a lot this weekend and will continue to improve.”

The Commodores will have a split squad next weekend as Catherine Newman and Courtney Ulery head to the Riviera All-Americans tournament Oct. 2-5 while the rest of the team will head to north to the Hoosier Classic Oct. 3-5. The All-Americans will be held at Pacific Palisades, Calif., while the Hoosier Classic will be hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
