WTN picks up third conference win

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 22 Vanderbilt Commodores topped the No. 38 South Carolina Gamecocks in Sunday’s match, defeating their opponent 5-2 for their third conference win of the spring.

Jackie Wu and Alex Leatu roared out to a quick 8-3 win on court two in doubles to give the Dores an edge. South Carolina tied the doubles matches when Josefin Andersson and Katerina Popova beat Marie Casares and Nelly Radeva 9-8 on court three.

Ashleigh Antal and Lauren Mira came back from being down in their set to beat Jaklin Alawi and Dominika Kanakova 9-8, clinching the doubles point and giving the Commodores a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

South Carolina tied the match up when Kanakova defeated Leatu 6-2, 6-1, but Wu retook the lead with her 6-4, 6-1 win on court one, defeating #34 Anya Morgina.

Antal put the Dores within a point of the win as she split her sets against Adriana Pereira, defeating her 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

With the Dores leading 3-1, Radeva put the match away for Vanderbilt, forcing a third set after dropping her first to Andersson. The win gave the Commodores their third conference victory and an 11-4 record this spring.

Lauren Mira wrapped up the scoring for the Commodores, defeating #64 Jaklin Alawi in three sets for the 5-2 win.

The Commodores travel to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama in two weeks, and return on Sunday the 25th to host Auburn.
