KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Catherine Newman, Chelsea Preeg and Hannah Blatt all picked up singles win to lead the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team at the second day of the St. Mary’s Tournament in Knoxville Saturday. The Commodores went 3-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles on the day.
Newman improved to 2-0 on the weekend in singles as she had little trouble winning on Saturday. The Greensboro, N.C., native won 12 of 13 games to win in straight sets over East Tennessee State’s Karina Kedzo.
Blatt also won for the second time in as many days with a straight set in over ETSU’s Andra Voinea, 7-5, 6-0. With the win, Blatt improves to 10-5 this fall.
Preeg rebounded after dropping her first singles match of the weekend on Friday to registering a 7-5, 6-0 win against Kelly Hotzhausen of East Tennessee State. With the win, the Naples, Fla., native improves to 13-3 this fall.
Vanderbilt’s doubles team of Jackie Wu and Preeg recorded an exciting 9-7 win over Tennessee’s pair of Rosalia Alda and Zsofia Zubor on Saturday for its team-best 13th win of the season. The sophomore duo has now won six of its last seven matches, dating back to Oct. 22.
The third and final day of the St. Mary’s Tournament will resume Sunday morning from the Varsity Tennis Courts on the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville.
