GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team went 4-4 in eight doubles matches to conclude the second day of the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C., Saturday. The Commodores competed in only two rounds of doubles play on Saturday as they will play its final round of singles on Sunday.
On Saturday, Vanderbilt’s team of Keilly Ulery and Erica Robertson went 2-0 in doubles en route to a fifth place finish in the No. 3 flight. Robertson and Ulery defeated Furman’s Jennifer Betts and Susan Bitetti, 8-5 before dispatching Estefania Balda and Nelly Ciolkowski of Clemson in the fifth-place match by the score 8-6. The VU duo finished the weekend 2-1 in doubles play.
Vanderbilt’s tandem of Chelsea Preeg and Jackie Wu clinched a spot in the second flight championship match for the second consecutive fall tournament as they cruised through Clemson’s team of Keri Wong and Caroline Magnusson (W, 8-1) in their first match of the day, setting up a rematch of the SEC Coaches Classic doubles final with Tennessee’s Rosalia Alda and Zsofia Zubor. Even though Preeg and Wu made the match much closer this time around, the Lady Vol duo held on to defeat the Commodore tandem 8-5 to win the draw. The VU sophomore duo is now 4-2 in doubles this fall.
Catherine Newman and Heather Steinbauer improved to 4-2 this fall as they battled back after losing their first match of the day, to defeat Furman’s Monica Arguello and Lauren Kline 8-2 in the seventh place match in the first flight. The big win for Newman and Steinbauer came after they dropped their first match of the day to Florida State’s Katie Rybakova and Noemi Scharle 8-5.
The 23rd Furman Fall Classic will wrap up on Sunday with one round of singles play beginning at 9 a.m. ET.
