CINCINNATI, Ohio – The sophomore doubles team of Erica Robertson and Heather Steinbauer defeated fellow sophomore teammates Chelsea Preeg and Jackie Wu, 8-5 to capture the doubles title at the Wilson/ITA Ohio Valley Regional Sunday. With the win, the duo of Steinbauer and Robertson have earned a spot in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor doubles championship on Nov. 5-8, in New Haven, Conn.
The all Vanderbilt doubles final once again showed that the ‘Dores have dominated the competition this weekend in Cincinnati.
Robertson and Steinbauer had to get by two Vanderbilt teams en route to its second straight doubles title of the fall season. The sophomore duo topped the senior tandem of Hannah Blatt and Catherine Newman, 8-4 in the semifinals to set up a championship match with Wu and Preeg.
Preeg and Wu joined their counterparts in the finals with an 8-3 win over Tennessee’s Maria Sorbello and Kata Szekely in the semifinals. With the win, the sophomore duo improved to 11-3 this fall.
Vanderbilt’s Newman, Steinbauer and Wu were also victorious in singles Sunday as they won their quarterfinal match.
Newman defeated UT’s Szekely in three sets, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 while Steinbauer topped VU’s Preeg in the quarterfinals, 6-4, 6-4. Similar to the Steinbauer-Preeg match, Wu had to play against teammate Keilly Ulery to see who would advance to the semifinals to play Steinbauer. In the end, Wu proved to be to much for the junior Commodore, winning 6-2, 6-4.
Later in the day, Wu played true to her No. 2 as she went onto to defeat Steinbauer in straight sets while Newman lost her first match of the weekend to No. 1 seeded Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee, 6-4, 6-2.
With two more wins on Sunday, Wu will now play Whoriskey in Monday’s singles championship. It will mark the first time this season that Wu and Whoriskey will meet on the hard court. The winner of the match will advance to play in the ITA National Indoor singles championship in two weeks in New Haven, Conn.
