NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team closes out the fall season this weekend as it travels to Auburn, Ala., for the SEC Fall Coaches Classic. The event features each of the 12 SEC institutions and includes nine of the top 75 teams in the country, according to the ITA rankings from May 25.
“Every year it’s a great tournament,” Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “We’re excited it’s going to be at a new facility that Auburn and the city of Auburn have partnered to build. It’s supposed to be a great site. We’re looking forward to great competition down at Auburn.”
Junior Courtney Ulery has led the Commodores this fall. Ulery has posted a 9-0 record, winning singles titles at the Furman Fall Classic, the Hoosier Classic and the June Stewart Invitational.
“She’s won some really close matches early, which gave her some confidence,” Macdonald said. “I think she’s one of the most improved players around, and she’s beginning to understand how to be more consistent on a day-to-day basis.”
The level of competition at the Fall SEC’s will be some of the best the Commodores have seen all fall. Seventeen of the 125 top singles players in the country and 11 of the top 60 doubles tandems will be competing in this weekend’s event.
Play begins Thursday at 4 p.m. and runs until Sunday. The tournament is divided into four singles flights and two doubles draws.
