Oct. 1, 2007

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Taka Bertrand, Catherine Newman, and Amanda Taylor will represent Vanderbilt this week at the 23rd Annual Riviera Women’s All-American Tennis Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

“The tournament is like a pre-NCAA event,” head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “The best players in college get together. It is the big fall tournament. These three have been working really hard and deserve to go. I think it’s important for them to play against the best players.”

No. 73 Bertrand opens up competition on Tuesday in the singles qualifying tournament as she faces No. 46 Katarina Zoricic from William & Mary. The 64-player qualifying tournament feeds into the main draw with eight players from the qualifier making the main tournament field.

Newman and Taylor earned spots into the main draw of the singles tournament due to their current ITA rankings. Newman enters the tournament ranked No. 28 in singles, while Taylor enjoys the No. 20 ranking.

The Commodores will also be represented in the doubles qualifying tournament as Bertrand and Newman will try to qualify for the main draw of doubles. The Commodore duo will face No. 33 Lindsey Nelson and Maria Sanchez from Southern California in Tuesday’s first round.
