CINCINNATI – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team continued to dominate its opposition at the Wilson/ITA Ohio Valley Regional, as it went a combined 7-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles play at the second day of the fall regional Friday.
Vanderbilt’s Hannah Blatt, Catherine Newman, Chelsea Preeg, Heather Steinbauer, Erica Robertson and Jackie Wu all recorded straight set singles victories on Friday while Keilly Ulery won in three sets over Sarah Miller of Louisville. With the wins, all seven of the Vanderbilt players will advance to tomorrow’s round of 16 in the main draw.
The Commodores are joined by Tennessee as the only two teams at the regional to go undefeated in singles play Friday.
In doubles, VU’s pair of Robertson and Steinbauer pushed its fall record to 6-0 with an easy 8-2 win over Purdue’s Kristen Magi and Bhavani Tirumurti. The sophomore duo will square off against Tennessee’s Rosala Alda and Zsofia Zubor in tomorrow’s quarterfinals.
The senior duo of Newman and Blatt also advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals as they defeated Jennifer Rabot and Michele Sammons of Purdue, 8-4. The Commodore tandem will face East Tennessee State’s team of Paula Jaime and Karina Kedzo in tomorrow’s quarters.
Preeg and Wu also clinched a spot in tomorrow’s quarterfinals after topping Purdue’s Anna Dushkina and Remi Martin 8-4 in the round of 16. With the win, Preeg and Wu improved to 9-3 this fall, including winners of five of their last six matches. The VU duo will face ETSU’s Kelly Holtzhausen and Yevgeniya Stupak in tomorrow’s quarters.
Through two days of the Wilson/ITA Ohio Valley Regional, Vanderbilt remains undefeated in both singles and doubles. The ‘Dores are a combined 8-0 in singles and 6-0 in doubles. The Commodores are the only team in the regional to have three doubles teams playing in tomorrow’s quarterfinals.
Play will resume on Saturday from the campus of University of Cincinnati.
