WT opens ITA Team Indoors with 4-0 sweep

MADISON, Wisc. – The No. 2 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opened up the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships as the No. 1 seed, sweeping No. 21 Wake Forest, 4-0.

With the victory, the Commodores advance to tomorrow’s 3:30 p.m. CT tournament quarterfinals. Vanderbilt is slated to take on No. 3 and eighth-seeded Florida who downed host school Wisconsin, 5-0.

VU opened its sixth consecutive ITA Indoor appearance sealing the doubles point on courts one then three.

Ranked 31st in the country, Astra Sharma and Fernanda Contreras handedly downed Wake’s Eliza Omirou and Anna Ulyashchenko on court one 6-2. On court three, Amanda Meyer and Christina Rosca clinched the one-point team advantage, defeating Mary Caroline Meredith and Alexis Franco 6-4. Both Commodore duos remain undefeated on the season with 3-0 records.

In singles, the Commodores came out to take five of six first sets. Emma Kurtz earned the Commodores their first singles win of the tournament. The sophomore out of Atlanta produced VU’s first of two 6-1, 6-1 victories as she came out on top at No. 4 singles against the Deaks’ Ulyashchenko for the 2-0 advantage.

Rosca followed her fellow sophomore teammate taking a 6-1, 6-1 win against Chandler Carter for the 3-0 Commodore lead. Rosca’s doubles teammate, Meyer, clinched Vanderbilt’s place in quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on court six over Wake Forest’s Meredith.
