GREENVILLE, S.C. — The duo of Courtney Ulery and Catherine Newman posted a fourth-place finish in the flight-one doubles draw to lead the Commodores in day one of the 22nd annual Furman Fall Classic on Friday. The Commodores showed signs of success against some the nation¹s best teams.
The 35th ranked Commodore opened the tournament by defeating a duo of Florida State’s nationally ranked pair of Katie Rybakova and Lauren Macfarlane 8-3 before falling to No. 17 Federica Van Adrichem and Ani Mijacika of Clemson, 8-2.
In the second doubles draw Vanderbilt sophomore Keilly Ulery paired up with freshman Jackie Wu. The Commodore duo fell in a hard fought match to North Carolina’s Sophie Grabinski and Jelena Durisic 8-4. In the next match, Wupaired up with teammate Chelsea Preeg to defeat South Carolina¹s team of Miljana Jocic and Suzanna Mansour 8-6 before falling in a close match to Florida State’s pair of Federica Suess and Jessica Wente, 8-6.
Junior Hannah Blatt and freshman Erica Robertson posted a 2-1 record on theday in route to a fifth-place finish in the third flight of doubles. After dropping their first match, the Vanderbilt duo won consecutive matches over teams Furman and North Carolina.
No singles matches were played due to inclement weather.
Tomorrow’s competition is set to begin with singles action around 9 a.m.
