TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 17 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team swept Alabama in straight sets to open the SEC season Friday afternoon in Tuscaloosa.
The Commodores (7-5, 1-0) started the match by earning their fifth consecutive doubles point. VU tandems Courtney Ulery/Liberty Sveke, Amanda Fish/Amanda Taylor and Taka Bertrand/Catherine Newman each earned a victory against Tide opponents.
Taylor was the first ‘Dore to notch a singles victory, defeating Shelley Godwin at No. 2 6-0, 6-1. Sveke followed minutes later with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Paulina Bigos at No. 5. Ulery, Bertrand, Fish and Newman also notched victories to finish the Black and Gold sweep over the Crimson Tide.
The Commodores will look for their second conference win this Sunday as they face Auburn on the road.
