NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt senior Catherine Newman will compete in the 2009 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship this week (Oct. 6-11) at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. It marks the second straight year that Newman will play at the prestigious event, which includes most of the nation’s top tennis players.
Newman will square off against Wichita State’s Lutflana Budiharto, who clinched a spot in the qualifying draw by knocking off Duke’s Monica Gorny in straight sets during the final round of the pre-qualifying draw. Before topping Gorny, Budiharto notched wins over Yevgeniya Stupak (ETSU) and Pamela Montez (UCLA).
If Newman advances past Budiharto, she will face the winner of Noemi Scharle (Florida State) and Carolyn McVeigh (Stanford). Scharle enters the 64-player draw as the No. 2 overall seed and 24th-ranked player in the country while VU’s Newman is ranked 46th.
The Greensboro, N.C., native will look to continue her success at the Riviera Tennis club this week after going 4-2 in singles action at the ITA All-American Championships a season ago. In 2008, Newman opened the tournament with three impressive wins over top-100 players before falling to 20th-ranked Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State. Newman bounced back after her loss in the main championship draw by defeating Georgia’s Nadja Gilchrist in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3.
