NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt senior Catherine Newman opened her week at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship by going 2-0 in singles play at the Riviera Tennis Club Tuesday. Newman edged Wichita State’s Lutflana Budiharto in the first round of the singles qualifier before topping Stanford’s Carolyn McVeigh in straight sets.
Newman, a senior, started the day with a long three-set win over 120th-ranked Budiharto. After taking the opening set six games to four, Newman dropped the second set 3-6, setting up a third and final set. Once again Newman proved that she is comfortable playing in third sets as she wore down Budiharto en route to winning the final set 6-3.
Later in the day, Newman took down Stanford’s 75th-ranked Carolyn McVeigh in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. With the win over McVeigh, Newman improves to 4-4 this fall and is now 6-2 in her last eight matches played at the fall ITA All-American Championships.
The win over McVeigh sets up a third round match on Wednesday with Florida’s Lauren Embree. Embree clinched a spot against Newman tomorrow after notching straight set wins over Lenka Hojckova (North Carolina State) and Liset Brito (FIU).
