WT in singles/doubles semifinals

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Vanderbilt will be well-represented in Sunday’s ITA Ohio Valley Regional singles and doubles semifinals, as the duo of Emily Smith/Emma Kurtz and singles player Amanda Meyer all remain undefeated in tournament play.

The Commodores went 1-2 in doubles quarterfinal action on Saturday, as fourth-seeded Summer Dvorak and Meyer fell short to Tennessee’s fifth-seeded duo of Hammond/Schuck, 8-5.

Second-seeded Kurtz and Smith came out on the winning end of a close battle against Louisville’s sixth-seeded Pahz/Humberg, 8-6. The Commodore duo will have an SEC test on their hands in Sunday’s semifinal, as the team faces Kentucky’s third-seeded Mikulskyte/Jacobs at noon.

In singles play, Dvorak, Kurtz and Meyer competed in Saturday’s round of 16. Dvorak, a junior from Laguna Beach, Cali. dropped a close match to Austin Peay’s Lidia Yanes Garcia, 7-6(3), 6-4.

Kurtz eased her way into quarterfinals after only allowing her opponent, Josefina Zehnder of Middle Tennessee, three games in a 6-1, 6-2 win. The 112th-ranked sophomore Commodore fell short in quarterfinals to UK’s Mami Adachi, 6-2, 6-3.

Freshman Amanda Meyer escaped Saturday unscathed and will represent VU in Sunday’s semifinal action. The Delray Beach, Fla. native earned an SEC-caliber victory over the Wildcats’ Lesedi Jacobs, 1-6, 7-5, 5-2, ret., then downed Kentucky’s No. 119 Emily Fanning in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-1.

Tournament action will continue from the Adams Tennis Center on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT. Admission is free for all fans.
