WT hosts June Stewart Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team kicks off its lone home tournament of the fall this Friday with the June Stewart Invitational.

The Commodores welcome Princeton, William & Mary and Wisconsin to this season’s annual competition at the Currey Tennis Center. Tournament play begins at 10 a.m. on Friday. First serve on Saturday is set for 9 a.m. and Sunday at 8 a.m.

Vanderbilt student-athletes begin play Friday afternoon facing competitors from Wisconsin in doubles and William & Mary in singles. 

Singles and doubles action will be played no-ad. In no-ad scoring, a competitor only has to win by one point. Therefore, when the score is 40-40 (deuce), the next point wins the game. The winner of each singles match will be determined from the best of three sets. 

Admission for all tennis events is free to the public with all matches taking place at the Currey Tennis Center.

June Stewart
June Stewart began her career in the Vanderbilt sports information office in 1973 and was named assistant SID in 1977. From 1979-90, she served as Vanderbilt’s women’s sports information director. In 1990, Stewart was promoted to women’s sports program director and assistant athletics director for future revenue sports.

Stewart was named associate athletics director at Vanderbilt in 1993 and remained in that position until her retirement. She was the first woman at Vanderbilt to serve as assistant SID for men’s sports and was a member of the NCAA Women’s Basketball Committee from 1990-96.

Stewart served as president of CoSIDA in 1990-91 and was the first of only three female presidents in the organization’s history. She was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame in 1997 and received the CoSIDA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000.
