NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Four Vanderbilt women’s tennis players will compete against some of the best tennis players in the southeast region this week as they travel to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. The tournament will run from Oct. 22-27 and will be hosted by Wake Forest University. The players competing for the Commodores this week include Catherine Newman, Chelsea Preeg, Keilly Ulery and Jackie Wu.
Both Newman and Preeg are fresh off undefeated weekends at last week’s June Stewart Invitational. Newman claimed the top spot of the Jason Valentine Draw as she defeated her teammate Wu in the championship match. Preeg garnered top honors in the Tom Black Draw as she defeated No. 55 Megan Broderick of Kentucky in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
Newman, ranked No. 40 in the preseason ITA singles poll, has been tabbed as the sixth overall seed in the singles bracket. The Greensboro, N.C., native will square off against Louisville’s Jo-Ann Van Aerde in tomorrow’s first round, while Preeg will match-up against Caitlin Whoriskey of Tennessee.
Wu has posted a sensational fall campaign as her eight wins ties for the team lead. The Holmdel, N.J., native, looks to continue her winning ways as she will face off against Duke’s Melissa Mang in Thursday’s round of 64. In three tournaments as a Commodore Wu enters the round of 64 as the ninth seed.
Sophomore Keilly Ulery will look for her sixth win of the fall season tomorrow, as she will square off against Kentucky’s Carolina Escamilla in the round of 64.
In the main doubles draw, both Commodore teams were selected as No. 9 seeds. The duo of Newman and Ulery will compete against Middle Tennessee State’s pair of Marietta Bigus and Alex Dachos in the first round while Wu and Preeg receive a bye.
Results and a recap from each day’s events will be posted on vucommodores.com immediately following competition.
