NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Vanderbilt doubles team of Heather Steinbauer and Erica Robertson had its perfect season snapped Thursday as it fell to Oklahoma’s tandem of Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Teona Tsertsvadze in the first round of the 2009 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships.
The Sooner duo topped the Commodore pair 8-3 on the indoor hard courts at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.
Steinbauer and Robertson came into the round of 16 of the national indoor tournament riding a nine-match winning streak, including two doubles titles in its last two fall tournaments. The sophomore duo clinched a spot in the national indoor doubles championship after going an impressive 5-0 en route to winning the doubles draw at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional on Oct. 25.
The rest of the Commodore women’s tennis team will make the three hour trek east to Knoxville for the St. Mary’s Tournament this weekend (Nov. 6-8). The `Dores will play matches at the UT Varsity Outdoor courts and the Tennessee Indoor Tennis Center throughout the day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
VU is coming off its best tournament of the fall season where they went a combined 23-6 in singles and 11-2 in doubles at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional. More impressively, three of VU’s losses in singles and both of Vanderbilt’s losses in doubles came against another Commodore.
