WT: 'Dores Upset No. 17 Aggies 6-0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 32 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team defeated No. 17 Texas A&M 6-0 at the Currey Tennis Center Tuesday afternoon.

The upset is Vanderbilt’s (11-5, 4-0) second Top 20 win of the 2007 dual match season. The Commodores defeated then-third-ranked Georgia Tech 5-2 at the end of February.

Vanderbilt is undefeated in Nashville with seven wins and will look to continue the home court victories next weekend with Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

After Taka Bertrand/Catherine Newman and Liberty Sveke/Courtney Ulery clinched the doubles point for Vanderbilt, Commodore tandem Amanda Fish/Amanda Taylor rallied from a 7-4 deficit to tie Aggies Sarah Foster and Tiffany Clifford at 7-7. Despite the comeback, Texas A&M edged the Commodores to clinch the win 9-7.

Sophomore Ulery recovered from her Sunday loss to defeat Tiffany Clifford in straight sets for the first Vanderbilt singles win of the afternoon. Sveke followed with a win over Aggie Nicki Mechem at No. 6 and junior Amanda Taylor sealed the Commodore with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sarah Foster.

Newman and Bertrand added the final points to the Vanderbilt total. No. 32 Amanda Fish and No. 17 Anna Lubinsky battled at No. 1, but the match ended in a draw due to time constraints.
