WT: 'Dores Have Tough Day at Riviera

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.Catherine Newman won an opening-round match in the singles qualifying tournament at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships before being eliminated in the second round. Taka Bertrand was eliminated in the first round, while the doubles team of Bertrand and Newman were also defeated in the opening round of the doubles qualifying tournament.

No. 28 Newman claimed a first-round victory over Nina Munch-Soegaard from TCU, winning in straight sets 7-6 (6), 6-1. Katarina Zheltova of Sacramento State defeated Newman in the second round, winning 6-1, 6-3.

Bertrand, ranked No. 73 in singles, won the opening set over Zoricic 6-4. Zoricic, ranked 46th in singles, came back to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-2. In doubles, Bertrand and Newman fell to the doubles tandem of Nelson and Sanchez 8-4.

Newman and Bertrand will continue play in the consolation draw tomorrow, while Amanda Taylor will open up play in the main draw of the singles tournament on Thursday, Oct. 4.
