NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team concluded play at the June Stewart Invitational on Sunday, finishing with another perfect day of doubles and picking up three wins in singles play.
“I thought we played really good doubles,” Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “We improved, which is the goal of the tournament. I think we played really good singles in the top two draws.”
The doubles team of Liberty Sveke and Keilly Ulery picked up an easy doubles win, easily defeating Elizma Schoones and Ernestine Koornhof of UT Martin 8-1. Amanda Taylor and Courtney Ulery also picked up an impressive doubles win, beating Alba Berdala and Maria Guerreiro of Indiana 8-5.
Katie Kilborn and Caroline Ferrell finished the weekend with a 5-0 record in doubles, winning a hard-fought match against Sara Leavy and Belisa De Brito of UT Martin 9-8 (7-3).
Taylor and Courtney Ulery faced off in the championship of the Craig Clark Draw. Ulery came out on top in a well-played match, winning 6-3, 7-6 (8-6). Ulery improved her fall singles record to 9-0.
“It was a great match,” Macdonald said. “It’s hard to play your teammate and I think they handled it with a lot of class and they played some pretty good tennis.”
Keilly Ulery finished the weekend perfect in singles play, defeating Sigrid Fischer of Indiana in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Kilborn picked up her second singles victory of the weekend, easily dispatching of UT Martin’s De Brito 6-1, 6-1.
Sveke suffered the lone loss of the day for the Commodores, falling to Guerreiro of Indiana 6-4, 6-2.
The Commodores return to action Nov. 1-4 at the SEC Fall Coach’s Classic, which will be held in Auburn, Ala.
