AUBURN, Ala. – Amanda Taylor, Catherine Newman, Courtney Ulery and Taka Bertrand each advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective singles draw, highlighting a successful day two for the Commodores at the Fall SEC Coaches’ Classic.
Vanderbilt placed two players in the quarterfinals of singles flight A. After enjoying a first-round bye, No. 20 Taylor advanced to the quarters after defeating Auburn’s Alex Haney 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 16. Teammate Newman, ranked No. 28, joined Taylor in the quarters, defeating Ana Zubori of South Carolina 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the round of 16. Keilly Ulery won her first round match in flight A over Kentucky’s Lauren Meier 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, before falling to Tiffany Welcher of Alabama 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8).
In singles flight B, Courtney Ulery continued her perfect fall season, improving to 10-0 with a win over Nanar Airapetian of Arkansas 6-4, 6-1. Bertrand also picked up a win in singles flight B, winning 6-3, 6-0 over Tennessee’s Jennifer Meredith.
Caroline Ferrell lost her opening match in singles flight C, losing to Samantha Orlin of Tennessee 6-1, 6-2. Liberty Sveke lost a pair of matches in flight C, falling to Soledad Podlipnik of Ole Miss 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, and Preethi Subramanian, also of Ole Miss, 6-2, 7-5 in the consolation draw.
Freshman Katie Kilborn split a pair of matches in singles flight D. After falling to South Carolina’s Megan McGavock in her first match of the day, Kilborn rebounded to defeat Heather Bybee of Auburn 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play, Bertrand and Newman advanced to the semifinals of flight A. The Vanderbilt pair defeated Rosalia Alda and Ghizela Schutte of Tennessee 8-4. Also in doubles flight A, Taylor and Courtney Ulery were defeated in the quarterfinals by LSU’s Mykala Hedberg and Staten Spencer, falling by a score of 8-5.
In doubles flight B, both Commodore doubles teams lost a match. Sveke and Keilly Ulery lost 8-7 to South Carolina’s Miki Jocic and Natasa Vuckovic, while Ferrell and Kilborn were downed 8-3 by Podlipnik and Laura van de Stroet of Ole Miss.
