WT cruises past Denver, wins 6-1

DENVER – Seventeen hours after recording its first dual win of the 2010 season, Vanderbilt pushed its record to 2-0 with a 6-1 win over 49th-ranked Denver at the Pinehurst Country Club on Sunday. The Commodores (2-0) took five of the six singles matches from the Pioneers (1-1) after winning the first two doubles matches.

The ‘Dores clinched the doubles point for the second consecutive day as the VU tandem of Rachael Dillon and Keilly Ulery topped DU’s Lorinda Boothman and Emma Isberg (8-3), after Preeg and Wu defeated Julia Bauregger and Sophia Bergner 8-4 at the number one slot. The 40th-ranked team of Wu and Preeg have now won 12 of their last 13 doubles matches and are 19-4 in 2009-10.

VU extended its lead to 2-0, when Preeg captured a straight set win (6-3, 6-1 over Bergner at the number three singles position. Minutes later, Ulery gave Vanderbilt a 3-0 lead when she posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Isberg.

With already a comfortable 3-0 lead in the match, Dillon recorded her first memorable dual victory in her Vanderbilt career with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Boothman and more importantly clinching the match for the ‘Dores.

With the match already in hand, VU’s Robertson and Newman each posted singles wins over their respected opponents to close out the 6-1 win over the Pioneers.

Newman’s match was one for the ages as she edged Julia Bauregger in a three set marathon. After winning the first set 7-6, including 8-5 in the tiebreaker Newman found herself on the other end of tiebreaker falling 8-6 in the break. However, like Newman has done many times in her four-year career she wore down her opponent in the third and final set to earn the win.

Robertson and Newman’s doubles match was suspended after VU had already clinched the doubles point.

The 22nd-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team will return to the courts next weekend when they travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
