NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team continued the June Stewart Invitational on Saturday morning, facing opponents from Wisconsin, Princeton, William & Mary and Lipscomb.
In singles action, the Dores went 4-2 overall and came out on top of two three-set battles.
After dropping the first set, 6-2, Emma Kurtz defeated the Badger’s Castellano, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Summer Dvorak earned the second three-set victory on the day, as the Laguna Beach, Calif. native rallied to down UW’s Rompf, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Against Wisconsin’s Grambeau, Emily Smith dominated the first set, 6-0, then took a second-set tiebreaker for the victory, 6-0, 7-6(3). Senior Payton Robinette earned a victory against a cross-town opponent in Lipscomb’s Tshtedi. Like Smith, Robinette defeated her opponent handedly in the opening set, 6-1, and followed up with a close second set to seal the victory, 6-1, 7-5.
In tandems, the Dores went 2-2 with both victories coming against Princeton.
The duo of Amanda Meyer and Emily Smith defeated the Tiger’s Pollner/McKee, 6-3, while Fernanda Contreras and Lauren Gish pulled away with a close 6-4 win against Steffensen/Goodwin.
Sunday’s action will begin at 8 a.m. The Commodores will face Princeton/Lipscomb at 10:30 a.m. and William & Mary in doubles around 2 p.m.
