EVANSTON, Ill. – Chelsea Preeg and Jackie Wu each captured straight set singles wins to lead the Commodores at the final day of the Wildcat Invitational on Sunday. The sophomores’ wins capped off what was an excellent season-opening tournament for the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team.
The `Dores closed out the weekend with an impressive 8-5 record in doubles and 7-7 mark in singles while competing against two of the nation’s top programs in No. 2 Northwestern and No. 45 DePaul.
“I was very pleased of how the team played this weekend, especially against two of the nation’s top programs in Northwestern and DePaul,” head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “This weekend was a great opportunity to see what we still need to work on before the dual season.”
After winning her singles match in three sets on Friday, Preeg needed little time to breeze through Northwestern’s Brittany Wowchuk, taking 12 of the 13 games in her favor to win 6-1, 6-0 for her second win of the weekend.
Wu became the second Commodore to defeat DePaul’s Selma Salkovic this weekend as she topped the Blue Demon, 7-6, 6-2 to earn the win.
Following the conclusion of the Wildcat Invite, VU’s 40th-ranked doubles team of Preeg and Wu were honored as the doubles champion of the weekend. The Commodore duo finished the weekend with a perfect 3-0 record, including two wins over two talented tandems from second-ranked Northwestern.
The ‘Dores will return to the courts next weekend as they travel to the Rocky Mountain region to square-off in dual action against Colorado and Denver. VU will face Colorado on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. CT before traveling to Denver to play the Pioneers at 11 a.m., on Sunday, Jan. 24.
