WT concludes non-con in Cali

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 7 Vanderbilt women’s tennis team concludes non-conference play this weekend on the West Coast, taking on Saint Mary’s on Saturday and Stanford on Sunday.

“We are really excited to go out to California for our last non-conference matches,” said senior Sydney Campbell. “We have two really good opponents this weekend, and they are great opportunities for our team. It’s always exciting to play Stanford and get to compete against one of the best teams in the country.”

The Commodores head into the weekend with a 4-3 record, as well as three Oracle/ITA ranked singles players and one ranked doubles team. VU’s three losses came consecutively against teams who now sit in the ITA’s top-5, Ohio State, Texas Tech and Michigan. Vandy most recently swept No. 10 Duke 4-0 in consolation play of National Team Indoors.

Astra Sharma leads the squad in the singles poll as the No. 5 player in the country. Campbell and Christina Rosca follow the redshirt junior at No. 16 and 60 respectively. Emily Smith joins Sharma in the tandems poll to become the 34th-ranked doubles team.

Scouting Saint Mary’s: The Gaels host Vanderbilt in Moraga, Calif. with a 1-4 record, having most recently dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker on the road at UC Santa Barbara and is 0-2 against ranked opponents. Saint Mary’s lone victory of the season came at home against San Diego State (5-2).

Scouting Stanford: Vanderbilt faces Stanford for the first time since the Cardinal halted the ‘Dores in semifinal play of the 2016 NCAA tournament championships. Ranked 25th in the country, the Cardinal are 4-1 overall and 3-0 at home. The squad’s one loss of the season came in Gainesville against top-ranked Florida, 4-1.
