BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team opened up play at the Hoosier Classic with Courtney Ulery advancing to the championship in singles flight B.
Courtney Ulery won a pair of matches to advance to the championship of singles flight B. Ulery beat Merel Beelen of Iowa 6-2, 6-3. The junior then defeated Lindsey Stuckey from Indiana in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (5).
“I definitely saw some improvement from last week at Furman,” head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “Courtney beat Indiana’s number two player in a great match. I’m really pleased with her development.”
In singles flight A action, Keilly Ulery lost her opening match 6-3, 6-2 to Indiana’s Alba Berdala. The Vanderbilt freshman bounced back to win her next match over Sarah Meghoufel of Indiana State 6-3, 6-3.
Caroline Ferrell, playing in singles flight C, also split a pair of matches. Ferrell won 6-0, 6-4 over Ashley Moccia from Western Michigan in her opening match. Ferrell lost a tough match in round two, falling to Sigrid Fischer from Indiana. Ferrell won the first set 6-4, but Fischer won the second set 6-2 and won the third set 10-point tiebreaker 1-0 (6).
Playing in her first action of the fall, junior Liberty Sveke split a pair of matches. Sveke defeated Lynne Poggensee-Wei of Iowa 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) in the first round. Georgia’s Adrienne Elsberry defeated Sveke 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8) in the semifinals of flight D.
Vanderbilt freshman Katie Kilborn lost her opening match of flight F to Candy Graetz of Iowa 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (6). Kilborn rebounded in her next match to win 6-2, 6-2 over Natasha Vieira of Kansas State.
Action continues Saturday at the Hoosier Classic with the conclusion of singles play and the beginning of doubles action.
