WT closes out Michigan Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Vanderbilt freshman Jackie Wu recorded her second win in as many days over a ranked singles opponent by topping Duke’s 48th-ranked Amanda Granson in straight sets at the final day of the Michigan Invitational. With the win, Wu pushes her singles record to a team-best 15-4. The Holmdel, N.J., native was the lone Commodore to notch a win in singles play Monday.

“We played against some great competition this weekend (three top-25 teams), which was especially good for our younger players,” head coach Geoff Macdonald said. “We came through with some good wins this weekend and we experienced some tough losses that we will learn from. The experience we got is irreplaceable.”

Sophomore Keilly Ulery entered the day aiming for her third singles win in as many days as she matched up against Duke’s 43rd-ranked Ellah Nze. After dropping the first set 6-2, Ulery battled back to force a third set before falling in the final set 6-2.

The Commodores will have a week off to prepare for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 31-Feb. 1. The `Dores will host the four-team event at the Currey Tennis Center on Vanderbilt’s campus. The three teams joining Vanderbilt include, No. 15 Fresno State, No. 42 Wake Forest and No. 28 Denver.

Each team is guaranteed two matches and the 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the Feb. 13-16 ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis.
