LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team closed out competition at the Kentucky Invitational Sunday by going 2-2 in singles and 1-2 in doubles play. The Commodores finished the weekend 14-8 in singles and 8-3 in doubles, including a doubles championship tandem in Heather Steinbauer and Erica Robertson.
The sophomore doubles team of Robertson and Steinbauer closed out the weekend with a perfect 4-0 record as they defeated Illinois’ duo of Kristina Minor and Christine Stromberg 8-4 in the Flight “B” championship Sunday.
The VU team of Chelsea Preeg and Jackie Wu undefeated doubles weekend came to a close Sunday, as they fell 8-4 to Virginia’s Lindsey Hardenbergh and Erin Vierra in the Flight “A” championship match. Preeg and Wu finished the weekend 3-1 in doubles.
In singles action, Preeg and Megan Gornet netted wins Sunday as they both picked up solid wins in consolation play. Preeg captured the consolation final with a straight set win (6-2, 6-3) over Ohio State’s Kelsey Haviland in the Flight “A” draw, while Gornet won in thrilling fashion against ETSU’s Miranda Cameron.
After dropping the first set 3-6, Gornet bounced back in the second set, taking it 6-3 and forcing a two-set tiebreaker. The St. Louis, Mo., native went back-and-forth with Cameron before edging out the tiebreaker 11-9.
The ‘Dores will return to the courts Oct. 22-26 as it will travel to Cincinnati, Ohio for the ITA Ohio Valley Regional.
