WT caps home play with sweep

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The second-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team closed out regular season home play Saturday afternoon, taking a 4-0 sweep over the No. 37 LSU Tigers on Senior Day.

Prior to first serve, the Commodores honored their two seniors, Payton Robinette and Astra Sharma, for their hard work and dedication to Vanderbilt University.

With the victory, the Commodores improve to 17-3 overall and 10-1 in Southeastern Conference play. Vanderbilt now boasts 15 ranked victories on the season. Vanderbilt capped the season undefeated at home in the regular season, giving VU a 59-1 home mark since the beginning of the 2013-14 season.

On court three, Fernanda Contreras and Summer Dvorak earned an efficient 6-0 victory over LSU for the doubles advantage. Christina Rosca and Amanda Meyer led on court two 5-0 before the Tigers’ Ryann Foster and Keenan Johnson earned their first game of the match. The Tigers broke serve on a deuce point to make the score 5-2, before the Commodores could break back and put the match away, 6-2.

The Commodores carried doubles momentum into singles play, taking the remainder of the squad’s three points in straight-set victories.

For the second match in a row No. 118 Meyer was first off the court. The freshman from Delray Beach, Fla. picked up her sixth league victory in a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kennan Johnson on court four.

Ranked third in the country, Contreras flew through her opening set against No. 82 Jessica Golovin, 6-2. In one of the most spirited sets of the day, Golovin drove the second set to a tiebreaker. Putting her previous games behind her, Contreras held onto a 4-0 lead to take the second set tiebreaker and the match, 7-6(3).

Up 3-0, Kurtz pulled through her first set against Luba Vasilyuk, 6-4. Kurtz, a junior out of Atlanta, flew through her final set to clinch the Commodores’ final regular season home victory, 6-4, 6-1.

Vanderbilt caps the regular season next weekend on the road, facing South Carolina then Florida.
