Surprise, Az. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team concluded day two of the ITA Fall Nationals with two Commodores advancing to the Round of 16 in singles play.
Kicking off day two for the Dores, No. 1-ranked Fernanda Contreras battled against Florida’s Ida Jarlskog. Contreras started strong and earned a swift 6-1 victory in the first set, but Jarlskog came back in the second set to defeat Contreras, 6-0, and send the match to a third set. In the final set, Contreras held Jarlskog to just four points to earn match victory, 6-4, and advance the senior to the Round of 16.
Junior Christina Rosca looked to continue her tournament win streak in taking on No. 5 ranked Duke’s Kelly Chen in the singles Round of 32. A slow start handed Rosca a 6-4 defeat in the first set, but she quickly got back on her feet with a 6-3 victory in the second to force a third set. In the final stanza, Rosca gained the advantage on Chen by holding the Blue Devil to only four points to pull the upset, propelling her to the Round of 16 alongside Contreras.
Amanda Meyer competed against UNC’s No. 10-ranked player in the tournament, Makenna Jones. Jones authored a strong start to claim the first set, 6-1, before likewise clinching the second set, 5-7, to end Meyer’s run at the championships.
Following singles play, Commodore pair Christina Rosca and Summer Dvorak took the court against North Carolina’s No. 2-ranked duo, Jones and Morra. The Tarheel tandem took out Rosca/Dvorak in the first set, 6-3. The Commodores rallied early in the second set but fell short to the ranked pair, 6-3, to cap their stay at ITA Fall Nationals.
