Athens, Ga. – The Vandy women’s tennis team opened day one of the Bulldog Classic against Wake Forest in singles play followed by Georgia in doubles action.
Kicking off the tournament in singles, No. 7 Fernanda Contreras took the court against Wake Forest’s Chandler Carter. Contreras won the first set, 6-2, followed by a domination in the second set by holding Carter to only one point, winning the match in a straight-set win, 6-2, 6-1.
Freshman Carolyn Campana continued her winning streak from the June Stewart Invitational, defeating No. 88 ranked Eliza Omirou in a three-set victory, 4-6, 7-6 (9), 7-5.
Continuing the successful run for the Dores, junior Emma Kurtz competed against Demon Deacon MC Meredith and took the first set, 6-4. In the second set, Kurtz continued to play strong tennis by owning the court in a 6-4 win.
In doubles competition, the Commodores saw two victories with one duo falling short to Georgia.
Dore duo Amanda Meyer and Fernanda Contreras defeated UGA’s No. 6-ranked Christofi/Coppoc, holding the Bulldog duo to only one point with a final score of 8-1.
Elsewhere,Emma Kurtz and Carolyn Campana took on Bulldog pair Gonzalez/Clayton and earned an 8-3 victory.
Christina Rosca and Emily Smith competed against UGA’s No. 34-ranked duo, Carles/Jokic. Rosca and Smith started strong but lost momentum in an 8-4 defeat.
Saturday morning the Dores kick off the second day of the tournament with doubles play followed by singles.
