Surprise, Az. – Kicking off ITA Fall Nationals in singles play, four Commodores competed in round one of singles with three Dores advancing to the Round of 32.
Beginning singles for the Commodores, No. 1 seed Fernanda Contreras battled against Tyler JC’s Genovese and earned a straight-set win, 6-3, 6-3.
Sophomore Amanda Meyer took on Stanford’s Arbuthnott and fell short in the first set, 4-6, before bouncing back in the second set with a 6-2 win. In the third set, Meyer claimed a 7-5 victory to clinch the match and advance to the singles Round of 32.
Junior Christina Rosca joined Contreras and Meyer in advancing to the Round of 32, defeating Koch from Kansas in a three-set victory,6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
Senior Emily Smith battled against Florida’s Kessler to win the first set, 6-4. In the second set, Kessler fought back with a 6-3 victory leading the match into a third set. In the final set Smith earned four points but ultimately fell short to Kessler, 6-4, concluding the Vanderbilt senior’s time in the tournament.
In doubles play, veteran Commodore pair Christina Rosca and Summer Dvorak saw success against Ole Miss duo Alexa Bortles and Isolde de Jong. The Dores owned the first set in a 6-4 win followed by a close loss in the second set 6-7 (4). Forces into a third set, the Vanderbilt duo clinched the win in a close 13-11 final set.
The Dores look to maintain momentum Thursday while competing in the Round of 32 in singles play and the doubles Round of 16.
