Pacific Palisades, Calif. – In the third day of the Riviera All-Americans, Vanderbilt senior Fernanda Contreras took the court for her fifth straight national semifinals round of singles play.
Contreras took on Gonzaga’s Sophie Whittle for a shot at making it to the singles final on Saturday afternoon. Opening up the first set, Contreras dominated the court in a swift 6-3 win.
In the second set, Contreras fought hard in a close 5-7 battle against Whittle resulting in a split set, which forced the match into a third-set tie break. In the third set, Contreras broke out strong quickly earning points, but she ultimately fell short in a 4-6 defeat.
Though Contreras fell short of repeating as Riviera All-American singles champion, Vanderbilt head coach Geoff Macdonald said he takes great pride in what Contreras and the Commodores accomplished this tournament.
“The Riviera All-American was a great tournament,” Macdonald said. “All the players had a significant improvement and learned a ton this week. I am proud of the effort by all the Vanderbilt players. I am proud of how Fernanda played today, she learned a lot and left it all on the court. I’m looking forward to our next tournament and excited to watch this team play again.”
The Commodores return to action Oct. 11 competing in the Ohio Valley Regionals in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
