COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 4 Vanderbilt women’s tennis dropped a hard-fought match to Texas A&M Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Aggies swiftly commanded the lead over the Commodores, collecting the doubles point over Vanderbilt with wins on courts two and three.
Ready to earn a comeback, the Commodores eagerly entered singles play.
Texas A&M quickly extended its lead to 3-0 after conquering a victory over No. 3 Fernanda Contreras, 6-2, 6-0 followed by freshman Carolyn Campana falling to Texas A&M’s Riley McQuaid, 6-3, 6-3.
Earning a comeback for the Dores, No. 8 Christina Rosca defeated Texas A&M’s Jayci Goldsmith, 6-3 in the first set followed by taking the second set over Goldmsmith in the set tiebreaker, 7-6 (6) cutting the Dores deficit to 3-1.
Keeping up the Commodores’ successful run, freshman Georgia Drummy bounced back from a 6-2 defeat in the first set taking down Texas A&M’s Tatiana Makarova in the second set, 7-6 (5). Drummy dominated the third set shutting out Makarova, 6-0 to earn the Dores second point of the match.
After splitting sets with Aggie, Renee McBryde, sophomore Amanda Meyer fought back from a 6-3 defeat in the second set to tie the third set 5-5. McBryde took the lead to earn a 7-5 win over Meyer, clinching the match for the Aggies, 4-2.
The Commodores are back in action at noon on Sunday against LSU at the LSU Tennis Complex. Admission to the match is free.
