NASHVILLE – The Vanderbilt women’s swim team participated in the nationwide “Hour of Power” relay Wednesday afternoon in memory of Ted Mullin, a former swimmer at Carleton College who passed away after losing a tough battle to synovial sarcoma.
The Ted Mullin “Leave it in the Pool” Hour of Power Relay for Sarcoma Research is the major fundraiser supporting the Ted Mullin Fund for sarcoma research.
The Hour of Power relay began after Mullin passed away in 2006. The Carleton men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams created the event to honor their fallen teammate as well as raise awareness and money for sarcoma research.
Over the past 12 years, the Hour of Power relay has grown from 15 teams competing in the event to now over 150 teams participating each year, raising over $730,000 total.
The Hour of Power relay was one of Mullin’s favorite practice sets and is made up of a one-hour, all-out relay with the mindset on teamwork with each relay working to maintain the same speed and stay on the same lap.
The money raised through this event will go towards the University of Chicago Medicine’s pediatric cancer research program where it will be used for cancer research along with projects.
