WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team wrapped up their fall tournament season this past weekend at the Purdue Challenge.
The women came out strong on the second day of play, winning all but two matches in the hidden duals set up. The Commodores swept Iowa in the second round of matches in Saturday’s play, after Lauren Mira, Marie Casares, Chelsea Preeg, and Ashleigh Antal won their singles matches against Illinois.
Freshman Antal and sophomore Mira each played strong sets against difficult opponents on Saturday. In her match against Illinois’ Abaijan, Antal split sets, coming back in the third set to win 6-3, 6-7(4), 10-3. Later that day, she again split sets, winning against Iowa’s Harazin 6-2, 4-6, 10-7.
Mira defeated her opponents Saturday 7-6(2), 6-3 and 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 in close play.
Day three saw mixed results as Vanderbilt’s three doubles teams fell to Georgia Tech and Illinois. Nelly Radeva won her singles match against Tech’s Wacker in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, while Antal split her sets but also came out a winner.
