Women sweep Lipscomb

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt Commodores kicked off their season with a speedy victory over the Lipscomb Bisons at Currey Tennis Center, wrapping up their first duals match of the spring season in just over two hours.

The Commodores swept doubles play in short order, with freshman Ashleigh Antal and junior Nelly Radeva winning 8-0. Jackie Wu and Alex Leatu won their doubles match 8-2.

In singles play, the Commodores swept the Bisons, dropping only five games combined. Antal, who made 18 straight points in her first set before conceding a point, defeated Elizabeth Keevil 6-0, 6-0 in 36 minutes.

“Ashleigh had an incredibly strong outing today,” said head coach Geoff Macdonald. “All of the girls had a solid first spring performance, and I like the improvements I’ve seen since our last tournament. I feel good about where we are.”

Radeva, who finished the fall season with a strong performance at the Purdue Invitational, defeated Deahna Welcher in the No. 3 spot for the Dores with a 6-1, 6-0 final.

“Nelly has really come along in her development,” said Macdonald. “Her continued improvements will be key in duals this season.”

Also showing their strength on the courts were Leatu, Wu, and Megan Gornet as they helped solidify a first big win to start their duals season.

The Dores take on the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks tomorrow at the Currey Tennis Center at 1:00 p.m
