Women's tennis upsets No. 4 Duke at National Indoor Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 11 Vanderbilt Commodores defeated the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils 4-1 in Saturday’s consolation match of the ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championships. Duke won last seasons’ Indoor Championship, and came in as the 2015 No. 4 seed. Vandy began consolation action after Cal ousted the `Dores Friday in first round play with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss. The strong Vanderbilt squad now owns a 4-1 mark.

The Commodores continued their success in doubles as they won the doubles point for the sixth match in a row.

Coming off a hard loss to Cal’s No. 9 pairing of Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi, Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares bounced back defeating Duke’ Beatrice Capra and Rachel Kahan in a 6-3 victory.

No. 32 Courtney Colton and Sydney Campbell remain undefeated in doubles, taking down Duke’s Ester Goldfeld and Alyssa Smith; 6-4. The tandem’s last loss dates back to October 21st in regional finals.

With the doubles point locked down in the Commodores favor, Vanderbilt looked to singles action to polish off the upset.

No. 15 Sydney Campbell suffered her first loss of the season Friday, but used the loss as momentum; earning the Commodores their second match point in an easy 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Blue Devil’s No. 87 Ester Goldfeld.

Duke generated its lone point at the No. 6 singles position. Annie Mulholland defeated VU’s Georgina Sellyn; 6-4, 6-1.

Junior Frances Altick came out on fire against Rachel Kahan, not alloweing her opponent to win a single game the first set. Alick continued her tenacity into the second set, defeating the red-shirted senior, 6-0, 6-3.

With the score now at 3-1, the Commodores needed one last match point to seal the Victory. However, the last point would not come easy as junior Courtney Colton had to fight her way back into the second set and came out victorious in a tiebreaker; 6-4, 7-6 (14-12).

The Commodore contingent has an early start to their day as they face No. 16 Oklahoma State Sunday morning at 8 a.m. CT. The Cowgirls come off back-to-back losses, losing to No. 6 Alabama Saturday, 4-0.
