NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The 20th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s tennis team won five of the six singles matches after winning the doubles point to post an impressive 6-1 win over No. 36 Yale at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center Sunday.With the win, VU (4-2) snapped Yale’s 23-match home winning streak. The loss drops Yale to 9-2 on the season.
The Commodores posted wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles position to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. VU’s 30th-ranked pair of Jackie Wu and Chelsea Preeg defeated Yale’s team of Vicky Brook and Lindsay Clark 8-4 at the No. 1 slot while Rachael Dillon and Erica Robertson took down Stevi Petrelli and Sarah Lederhandler, 8-6.
Vanderbilt continued its momentum into singles play as Catherine Newman and Heather Steinbauer won their singles matches, giving Vanderbilt a 3-0 lead. Newman posted a straight set win (6-3, 6-1) over Brook at the No. 2 position while Steinbauer took down Clark in three sets (6-0, 4-6, 6-3) at the No. 6 slot.
Holding a 3-1 lead in the match, the ‘Dores clinched the dual when Wu took down Yale’s Kent in straight sets (7-6, 6-4) at the top position. With the win Wu improves to 18-4 overall and 5-1 in dual action.
With the match already in hand, VU’s Dillon and Preeg captured three-set wins over its respected opponent. Preeg took down Jessica Rhee at the No. 3 position while Dillon was victorious at the No. 5 slot, dispatching Elizabeth Epstein, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.
Vanderbilt will return to the courts next weekend when they host No. 66 Brown in its first home dual of the season at the Currey Tennis Center. The match with the Bears (7-2) is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. CT on Saturday.
