Women's Tennis Roll Over Tide 6-1

3/3/2006

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Commodores (9-1) notched the victory in their SEC opener against Alabama 6-1.

The No.15 ‘Dores got off to a rocky start in the doubles round, surrendering the point to the Tide 2-1. Freshmen tandem Liberty Sveke and Courtney Ulery earned the only doubles victory of the night against Natalie McElveen and Ayala 8-5, improving their overall record to 5-1.

“I told the team in the locker room that Alabama really played well, the two doubles wins were huge,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Geoff Macdonald said. “They volleyed well and they just played a tough match.”

The Commodores quickly retaliated in the singles round, taking straight set wins in all singles contests. Ulery, who sat out last weekend against Rice, returned to No. 4 singles and was the first to notch a win (6-1, 6-2). Amanda Fish and Amanda Taylor quickly followed with wins at No. 1 (6-2, 6-2) and No. 3 (6-3, 6-1). Fish’s upset over 7th ranked Robin Stephenen improved her overall record to 8-2.

Caroline Ferrell clinched the Commodore win by defeating Shelley Godwin 6-3, 6-2.

“I’m very proud of the way we came out in singles. Our poise was really good and we hung on. All seven players really contributed. To loose the doubles and then to come back and not loose a set is just is great. It was a great win,”Macdonald said.

The Commodores will look for their second SEC win on Sunday against Auburn (4-4) in Nashville at 12 p.m. The Tigers dropped their first SEC match Friday night to Kentucky in Lexington.

All Vanderbilt Tennis camp alumni are invited to Sunday’s match to enjoy some refreshments while supporting the Commodores.
