Women's Tennis Hosts June Stewart Invite

Oct. 20, 2006

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s tennis team will host the 8th annual June Stewart Invitational this weekend at the Currey Tennis Center in Nashville.

The Commodores will join competitors from Murray State, Arizona State, Florida International, Louisville, and Middle Tennessee State. The tournament is in round robin format, with nine singles draws and four doubles draws.

Competition will begin at 9:30 am on Friday and run through Sunday afternoon. Sunday’s matches and schedule will be announced on Saturday.

Halfway through the fall season, Commodore sophomore Liberty Sveke is undefeated with 6 wins, senior Amanda Fish is 7-1 and freshman Catherine Newman is 8-1.

The tournament is named in honor of June Stewart, a recent inductee into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and a former Vanderbilt Associate Athletic Director.

When Stewart joined the Commodore team in 1973 as the Secretary for Sports Information, she became one of only a few women employed in the athletic department. Stewart used her status to promote more women’s programs and female participation in the industry as well as encourage the use of marketing technology.

Stewart has earned national recognition for her achievements, including the All American Foundation Scoop Hudgins SID Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award from CoSIDA, the Nashville Sports Council Volunteer of the Year Award, the Reese L. Smith Award for Achievement and Community Service, the CoSIDA Trailblazer Award and induction into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame. Stewart was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
