11/10/2003

Members of the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team were on hand at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the Southeastern Conference Fall Coaches Classic in Peachtree City, Ga., this past weekend to play their final matches of the fall season.

Schmandt and Tsoubanos won their first round match against Kuhn and Smekodub of Tulane, 8-0, marking the second time they had defeated that pair this season. In the second round, however, Duke’s Zawacki and Johnson gave the Commodore duo their first lost of the fall season, 8-5. Schmandt and Tsoubanos had won 11-consecutive matches in the fall after being paired together or the first times in their Vanderbilt careers at the All-American. At the SEC Fall Coaches Classic, junior Annie Menees went an undefeated 8-0, winning four singles matches and four doubles matches with partner and classmate Audra Falk. Menees won the Women’s B Singles draw and the Women’s A Doubles draw. Falk dropped her opening round match in Women’s A Singles action, but went on to win her next two matchups. Sophomore Ashley Schellhas and freshman Helene Stephens, playing together for the first time, advanced to the semifinals of the Women’s B Doubles draw. In singles, Stephens made it to the finals of the Women’s C Singles draw, while an injured Schellhas posted a 1-2 record and withdrew from her final match. The Commodores closed what had been a very successful fall season and now await their dual-match slate. Their first match of 2004 is scheduled for Jan. 16 at 2:30 p.m. CT against Michigan State at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center. — VU —
