Women’s Tennis Finishes Fall Season At Nat’l Indoors

11/6/2003

Members of the Vanderbilt women’s tennis team were on hand at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the Southeastern Conference Fall Coaches Classic in Peachtree City, Ga., this past weekend to play their final matches of the fall season.

Seniors Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos competed as the top-ranked doubles tandem in the National Indoors, an honor they earned by winning the ITA All-American Championships a month ago. Four of the remaining Commodores spent the weekend at the Peachtree City Tennis Center playing against conference rivals in a six-draw, 61-player event. Schmandt and Tsoubanos won their first round match against Kuhn and Smekodub of Tulane, 8-0, marking the second time they had defeated that pair this season. In the second round, however, Duke’s Zawacki and Johnson gave the Commodore duo their first lost of the fall season, 8-5. Schmandt and Tsoubanos had won 11-consecutive matches in the fall after being paired together or the first times in their Vanderbilt careers at the All-American. The Commodores closed what had been a very successful fall season and now await their dual-match slate. Their first match of 2004 is scheduled for Jan. 16 at 2:30 p.m. CT against Michigan State at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center. — VU —
